PROFILE OF MONAGHAN COUNTY
Monaghan is a predominantly rural county with 36140 (65%) persons living in rural areas. The CSO (2006) revealed that 22.3% of the 18,665 households in county Monaghan are single person households. Co. Monaghan has a particularly high rate of older persons living alone; accounting for almost a third of all persons over the age of 65 in the county. 1,216 females and 678 males over the age of 65 live alone in the county. Of particular significance is the number of persons living alone with disability, 890 people with a disability live alone, which is 23.1% of all persons with a disability living in private households. The comparative figure for the state is 20.9%. County Monaghan has the highest percentage in the state of females with a disability living alone in private households at 44.3% (CSO, 2006).
Monaghan has a total of 2475km of road network of which 574km are classified as local secondary and 975km local tertiary roads – one of the highest in Ireland. 2059 rural households do not own a car.
